As a student from elementary school up to college I have had many experiences that have helped to shape me as a future educator. The teachers that have caused me to feel defeated are the ones that gave me a perspective of how some students are going to take the words so personally and hold on to them for the rest of their lives.
As a teacher, I want to make my students feel enlightened and see their personalities shine through my class. By giving them the space to feel safe and comfortable, it will allow them to learn to their full potential. There were teachers that I had that changed my perspective in their class when they showed up to watch me in the school musical. I want to be a teacher that the students know care about them and what they are involved in. As I get to know them as well as hear about the extra-curricular activities that they are in, I will make the effort to find time to see and support them as much as I can.
Even during times of recess that teachers count as their break, I plan on playing and interacting with the students. Children pick up on how they are treated so as they see that I am making an effort to support and get to know them, they will reciprocate that energy back to me. When children feel respected, they are more likely to show respect towards the teacher. In my classroom, all of my students will feel respected, seen, and valuable.
